Historical buildings like St. Peter’s Abbey or Gravensteen (the Castle of the Count) are beautiful locations with magical corridors, endless stairs in the towers, high-ceilinged rooms and heavenly gardens. They have not been lived in for ages.
Nevertheless, the buildings are not empty or abandoned. There is so much to do, even now. Great exhibitions on various subjects, hunts, fancy dress parties and workshops...Children (and their teachers) can expect to be extremely spoilt.
The ghosts of St. Peter’s Abbey still walk around here. Sometimes you will be allowed to walk in their shoes for a few hours. Just imagine: the class sitting at old-fashioned desks, quills in hand, surrounded by creaking bookcases and crazy miniatures? Historische Huizen Gent has a heart for children and children love historical houses. Especially for this age group the team creatively translate heritage into the modern world. Because we want to interest young people in history and culture.
